How to Get Your Photography Exhibited in Major Galleries

Thursday 21st October
6-8pm
Lecture Theatre,
University Centre Hastings
Price - £5 members / £7 non-members

This question & answer style talk will provide you with an insight into the process of developing a creative photographic idea into a solid proposal, good enough to be commissioned and exhibited. Hosted by photographer Grace Lau and curator Professor Val Williams, this session will offer a very broad perspective.

Val Williams is Professor of the History and Culture of Photography at University of the Arts, London and Director of the Photography and the Archive Research Centre at the London College of Communication. She has curated numerous exhibitions, including the Martin Parr Retrospective at the Barbican in 2001 and How We Are at Tate Britain in 2007.

Grace Lau is a photographer, writer and lecturer. In 2005, the arts council funded Grace for her project to reconstruct a 19th century Chinese portrait studio in Hastings in which she recorded an archive of diverse 21st century 'types'. This is her response to 'exotic' portraits taken by 19th century European travellers to China.

Subsequently, this series of portraits was exhibited first at Photofusion in Brixton, then a selection was shown at the Tate Britain exhibition "How We Are: Photographing Britain" in 2007, before touring to Wales, Brighton and Hastings.

Brody V Evans

Very good article and short film here via The Guardian.

Debate between Nevile Brody and Ben Evans that is generally centered on the current  LDF and ADF ( London design Festival and Alternative Design festival - both of which I have already flagged up here repeatedly ).

I have issues with both of them - Brody can sometimes be obtuse for the sake of it and has made some contrary and plain stupid comments on other designers in the past - and I used to know Ben Evans quite well, I went to college with him ( his real name is Benjamin Blackstone-Evans, Baronet of Stoke Newington ) and I grew to really dislike him - and I'm afraid that both of them suffer the concequences of extreme but polarised elitism. Brody, at least - is a designer, Evans is an administrator and opportunist - but read the article carefully and listen to what they have to say - and try and understand what Andrew Dickinson is suggesting with his reporting.

"...... but as the global financial crisis struggles to heal itself, designers everywhere continue to suffer. The recession has not been kind to studios worldwide, and British designers face the possible demise of the Design Council (its future is under government review). Some 60,000 designers of all kinds will graduate from UK colleges this year, says Brody; it's no longer clear how many of them will have jobs in the industry.

Evans thinks this may be a good thing. "The recession has brought a bit of a cleanout," he says. "I'm strongly of the view that what we've lost is the mediocre. But the good has to work a bit harder."
Brody agrees. "Graduates are starting to ask questions about meaning, about role, about context. For 20 years, it's been a given that you go to college, you get trained up to do a job, and the main thing you're focusing on is getting the best-paid position and the best-polished output. That's changed."

Introducing.....

We have a new website - almost...

In addition to this blog, I have set up another site that will act as a resourse assistant for the modular coursework - it is a place to get specific work related information and I shall post anything that is appropriate to the briefs and coursework - timed to support specific projects. Working in conjunction with the other staff and the library - you should be able to use both sites to fully support your work.

I'm not going to do everything for you - but there is a world outside google and facebook. I still have a few things to add and not all the links are live yet - it's quite a lot of work to keep these sites up and running - so please use them - and get into the habit of checking the main blog every day - or you may miss out on something important. I also hope to be able to make all your paperwork available online rather than printing it out, and any documents you need easy to find and download.

The addresses to both sites are footers on any emails I send out - so you can't lose them - but please bookmark them.

... and yes, it's orange... because that's the colour of the 4th floor - no other reason.

Changes to college website

There have been some big improvements and additions to the college website, if you go through the student portal on the main page - or click here - you get access to a raft of new features, including the dedicated  H.E. pages here ( nice pic of David! ) which has loads of useful links and information - and access to the Wiki pages. ( not strictly live yet - but nearly there ) Make use of these features - a lot of work has gone into them!

Big news includes an upgrade of the coffee in the atrium cafe to Costa.... apparently that's very important to some people.

Loud Flash - Punk on Paper

However respectable they may appear now, some of design’s heavyweights cut their teeth in the gritty sphere of punk posters and DIY aesthetics. Haunch of Venison’s London gallery launches an exhibition this week celebrating the rich visual heritage of Punk posters.

Loud Flash: British Punk on Paper, The Mott Collection runs from 24 September - 30 October at Haunch of Venison, 6 Burlington Gardens, London W1S.

( oddly enough - I was at a party last night and the lead singer of Alternative TV was at the bar... there are quite a few old punk stars living in Hastings )

De La Warr Film season

In addition to the SCCH film club in the Library - there will be a really good film season at the De La Warr - starting next week - click here for details.

Don't forget that Hastings has it's own independent digital cinema at The Electric Palace - it's a fantastic venue in the Old town and has a great selection of films - details here.

Got Kids?

HE Learning mentor and FDA Graphic Comm / Illustration and Foundation tutor, Hannah Rollings - will be in residence at the De La Warr this weekend - creating a rainforest installation and running a badge making workshop - aimed at Children aged 5+ - but probably just as much fun for the grown ups, I'm sure you can borrow a child from somewhere...

Project Brief for Creative Students:

Create an installation for large lift space at Towner, Eastbourne

On 16 October 2010 Towner in partnership with Melting Vinyl are staging an evening of Art and Music to celebrate the forthcoming exhibition devoted to Robert Mapplethorpe.

Provocateur. Innovator. Icon. Artist Rooms: Robert Mapplethorpe at Towner feature over 50 of Mapplethorpe's most defining works from the 1970s and 1980s including Andy Warhol, Patti Smith, Marianne Faithfull and Lisa Lyons.

Towner and Melting Vinyl invite proposals to transform the interior of the lift for that evening, using the exhibition as inspiration.  The installation can combine live performance as long as it is within the lift space. Other events happening on the same evening are live music, films and spoken word.
Technical Info : The lift space is approx in metres 3W x 4L x 4H  with doors opening on one side.
Nothing can be screwed into walls/ floor/ceiling and all temporary fixings (tape/ blue tac) needs to be removed afterwards

Any lights/ music etc will need to be powered by batteries as there are no sockets within the lift
Materials to be provided by Towner and artists will have 2 hours prior to the event to install the work
Please email all proposals with a maximum of 3 jpegs to team.towner@eastbourne.gov.uk deadline Friday 1 October.

Further information about the event

Robert Mapplethorpe : Artist Rooms:

Studio 54 at Towner: in association with Brighton Photo Biennial 2010.
Music/films/spoken word and art installation
Saturday 16th October, 8.30pm –doors, 9pm start until 1am
Towner, Devonshire Park, College Road, Eastbourne, BN21 4JJ
Tickets: £8 / £6, NUS, DSS, OAP
Over 18s only

Utilizing two levels of Towner, the entrance of the building for an art college/younger aged artists, to set the scene, the café for another more singer-songwriter base group, the room off the cafe for the DJ with the room sliding back.

Areas lit from floor to ceiling by floor lights in darker colours.

The idea is to create an art/club atmosphere from the period, each room offering an experience, away from the exhibition. (Drinks cannot be taken into the exhibion)

To further the atmosphere readings of Patti Smith from ‘kids’ book of the week Radio 4 in between the songs.

An art installation/performance art or even tape player with music or words in the lift, a brief for this for a local or Brighton based art college, foundation /degree, photography or fashion.

Wednesday 22 September 2010

Some changes for the new year.

From next week - you will have access to Student Central, a dedicated HE Wiki that is in the process of going live now and two dedicated FDA Graphics blogs.

This blog will continue - just as it has through the year - and I'd like to continue the drive to being more newsy, accessible and social, you can email me anything that you want to include - and comment on any post.

in addtion - there will be a sister blog that will go live on Monday that is dedicated to supporting your day to day work - references and links that are directly relevant to the work you are doing will be scheduled to appear at the right time, so if there are books or iplayer links etc that are handy for a certain brief - they will be posted in conjunction. You will also be able to access information about the course, college, staff and coursework - so between the online services available - you get pretty much 24 hour, 365 days-a-year support. If you want to suggest anything - feel free to email me in the usual way, or just stop me and have a chat.

Last year there was an attempt to set up a facebook group that never really got off the ground, as most students found it easier to go through mine instead - I've pulled the plug on that - even I have to have a bit of a life - but I think I think it's a good idea for you to set up a facebook group for the FDA and use it for your own benefit - so that you all have some online space that does not have the shadow of me or the college looming over it, and you are all going to encouraged to have blogs and online storage this year - we have all these facilities - so please use them.

All these services are open to FDA1 / 2 and Communication Graphics students on BAhons Top Up.

Enrolment day on Monday

As you have already been informed - enrollment day at Station plaza for all FDA1 and 2 students is next Monday morning. ( Sept 27th )

It's really important that you are fully prepared and have all the necessary information and your £100 deposit with you - or you cannot enroll. ( I'm going to clarify this tomorrow - but as I understand it, the deposit is for students not in a position to pay their full fees yet, and is by arrangement )

Please accept that as this is a brand new building, there may be some bedding in issues at first - this is the first time the college will be at full capacity and it may seem a bit bewildering at first - and there are a few things to get used to - the close relationship between FE and HE is a new experience for many of you.

One of the first things I will do in the afternoon is show you all how to exit the building correctly during an emergency - and there are some other new rules and regulations that come as standard with a brand new building - remember - it's £97m woth of college - so please treat it with respect. I'll talk to you in detail - but be prepared for the following discussions, more details can be found in the student handbook - available from student central.

- Eat and drink within designated areas only
- Refrain from chewing gum
- Smoke at least 50 metres from college buildings ( important!!)
- Leave the College clean and tidy
- Use non-abusive and non-offensive language
- Dress appropriately
- Follow the Health and Safety Policy
- Wear their ID card at all times whilst on campus
- Attend on time and contribute positively
- Work hard and meet deadlines
- Inform the college promptly if they are unable to attend
- Comply with the licensing and copyright rules required by the college Learning Resource Centre in relation to resources
- Use mobile phones with consideration and switch them off around learning areas
- Adhere to the IT users policy
- Check their college email regularly for announcements and use it for any communication with college staff

Dollar Bill redesign

 From Here.

The American dollar is in bad need of makeover. Thanks to the Dollar ReDe$ign Project, we may now have some options.

Organized by creative strategy consultant Richard Smith, the Dollar ReDe$ign Project is soliciting ideas for the dollar bill of the future. "Our great 'rival', the Euro, looks so spanky in comparison it seems the only clear way to revive this global recession is to rebrand and redesign," the project notes on its website.
Though the most recent competition is now closed, voting ends on September 30. We've compiled some of the best dollar designs below. Which one is the most suitable for our beloved greenback? Check them out -- and check out the Dollar ReDe$ign Project for more information.

Hastings Pier Shop appeal.

From David Francis.

Hi, I'm David and I manage the Hastings Pier Shop at 34 White Rock, on the seafront opposite the old ice rink. The Pier Shop is the outlet and info centre for the Hastings Pier and White Rock Trust who are heading the project to save the pier and regenerate the White Rock area. The shop sells locally made clothes, hats, bags, cards and gifts; mainly with a Hastings and Pier theme; and some good second hand and vintage clothes, ceramics and jewellery. The shop is also available to hire for art exhibitions, music groups etc.

The shop is reliant upon a wonderful and dedicated team of volunteers without whom it would not be able to open, and we need more volunteers! It is an inspiring and stimulating place to work for anyone interested in Hastings Pier, local history, community regeneration, local arts and fashion. We need people with all sorts of skills. If you have some time please get in contact with me, David Francis by email, or you can call me on 435 587

Showcase: Oscar Fernando Gomez

Interesting little piece on how and why someone became a photographer - quite moving, too.

Showcase: Non Format

Very nice site for a very strong, top end agency - underneath the stylistic surface is a very good design ethic.

Don't forget, London Design Festival starts soon - www.londondesignfestival.com

John Lloyd: 50 Years in Design

Very interesting and informative article about John Lloyd - with a good interview and examples of his work - and a link to his website archive - which he regards as an 'educational' archive - he also has some quite interesting things to say about design education that I broadly agree with.

Many thanks to Jonathon S. for pushing it my way.

YCN prizes

The full list of winners is now online - including Jonathon Stanbrook - not only did he win, but he won in a catagory we don't teach - and on his own - and not as part of a creative partnership, like the other entrants - well done!

Design Competitions Website

Found by Ellen, FDA2 - nice site of competition briefs.

Deathtrap Website Intro Movie

One of my mates went to see this in the West End last night and sat behind Lord Archer - but didn't let it ruin his evening, it's a very good play - but the Website has an exceptionally clever little intro movie when you log on - just using alphanumerical characters from a typewriter font, it acts out several key scenes from the play. Well worth thinking about - specially if you are one of the new FDA1's that are already logging on.

Personality packaging

Really important article for all of you - is essential to FDA 2, you have a major module and the YCN / D&Ad briefs that will directly relate to this concept.

Personal Inspiration Blogs

Paul Pensom is the art director of Creative Review - he has a simple, unfussy personal inspiration blog - exactly as we have already talked about - for things that he sees and finds that inspire him - you will all need to do the same next year - online archiving is easy, free and accessible - and I'll be checking.

Good stuff on the telly tonight.

7pm BBC 2 - Culture Show special, Alistair Sooke on the art of WW11, and later onBBC4 at 9pm - The Peoples Palaces. The Gothic Revival in Civic Buildings, last weeks episode about the architecture of Liverpool was excellent.

To mark the 70th anniversary of the Battle of Britain the Culture Show presents a special on the art of World War II. Despite being locked into a life-or-death struggle, wartime Britain saw an extraordinary explosion of art. From portraits to posters, cartoons to huge canvases, art was suddenly everywhere. Among the works were some of the most intense and immediate creations of the 20th century.

Presenter Alastair Sooke explores the often overlooked history of Britain's wartime Renaissance. He meets the Blitz survivors, factory workers and Land Girls who became the subject of iconic paintings and talks to contemporary war artists about the challenges of creating art in conflict zones. Travelling from the shipyards of the Clyde to the concentration camps of northern Germany Alastair discovers how art bore witness, rising above propaganda to create an enduring, deeply humane record of the 'People's War' and laying the groundwork for our own understanding of what art should be and do.

Important note for all students.

The computers in FDA Graphics are all installed, networked and up and running, they are brand new iMacs with larger screens than the ones you are used to, up to date software including more extensive software packages than the old one at Archery Road. Because of the scale of the computer network at the new college and the numerous other computers you have access to, and various other things that I'll talk to you about on your first day - I strongly recommend you keep all your work on a portable hard drive ( NOT a USB key ) and keep it with you at all times - or use 3rd party online storage - like dropbox. I also suggest you keep your own mouse mat - they cost nothing and you have computer access all over the college - I said this last year until I was blue in the face - nothing looks more ridiculous than a graphics student struggling to use a computer because the optical mouse wont work on the desk - all the desks are brand new bright white melamine - your mouse WILL NOT WORK ON THEM without a mouse mat.

Also - because they are brand new iMacs - THERE IS NO FIREWIRE INPUT!!!!! - so make sure you have an adapter or a suitable cable, see below.

Designer's sketch books.

"In the design world, you rarely get to see the rough workings of creatives’ minds. Instead we’re presented with the finished and perfected product of months or sometimes years of work. So it’s exciting to get a chance to nose through the sketchbooks of some top international graphic designers in a new book from Thames & Hudson".
