Wednesday Night Drinks

As you probably know, FdA Graphic Communication students are meeting up at the Jenny Lind in High Street around 6PM on Wednesday 28th to mark the start of the term. First year students are more than welcome to join in; if you don't know how to get there, we could meet up at the Stade Hall at 5.30 and walk to the Old Town together.
Here is a directions map: A is the college, B is the Stade Hall and C is The Jenny Lind.

Hope to see you all tomorrow!'

Very nice little film here about the design process from one of the most important people in the industry. MW gave me my first job back in 1989 ( and was the first person to make me redundant - but I don't hold it against him, great bloke ), spot the accidental name check for an FDA2 student.

I'm not going to book staff for this day, too many distractions - you will all have work to do independently and I will be there all day for both years - along with the following events.

A welcome talk from the SU officers based at Brighton, Lydia Leonard (College Youth Worker) will also be present to ask students for their input on what events that would like to happen over the next year. This is an opportunity to meet new HE students and find out ways to get involved in uni life.

I think there are also drinks organised at the Brass Monkey - if you like that sort of thing.

This has come through from Brighton - it's slightly earlier than expected, and you can also make your own way. Illustration are going by train to Moulscombe and getting a free shuttle bus - and then going by another free bus to Grand parade to see the animation MA show - you are welcome to attend too. Apparently - if you are early enough, there are goodie bags.

Parking Space in Hastings

frm Joanna - FDA2. I know where this is, it's literally just behind the college and is very safe and convenient, contact Jo or Me if you want details. If you don't snap it up - a member of staff will be straight in there - they have to pay a fortune to park in the basement.

I have a parking space that's available Monday to Fridays, in a private off-road car park about a 2/3 minute walk from uni. For anyone who would like to use it for the term, or the year, it's £10 per week flat price payable by a standing order at the beginning of the week. I'm happy for it to be used at weekends too providing my friends/family aren't using it.

Thank you!

P.S.

Sorry about the ugly blue colour that occasionally comes up on links - C&P'd something that buggered up the CSS on this site and I can't seem to be able to fix it properly - I'll be moving over to Wordpress soon anyway.

Submarine

Excellent new film on this week at The Electric Palace, Hastings own independent cinema. I keep telling you how important it is to be part of and absorb popular culture or there is no point in you being part of the industry - and it's independent films like this that inspire and inform marketing, design and media - so make a habit of visiting the cinema, reading the papers and keeping up with the arts - or you will be left behind and - essentially, be ignorant.

Submarine
Thu 29 Sep // Fri 30 Sep // 20:00 / Electric Palace Cinema - Old Town
Dir. Richard Ayoade / 2010 / UK

This debut comedy drama follows a 15-year old boy who has two objectives: to lose his virginity to the girl of his dreams before his next birthday, and to stop his mother (Sally Hawkins) from leaving his father and hooking up with a new age mystic. What excels Ayoade's film from being just another British coming of age story is the stylishness of his direction. Presented in the fashion of a French New Wave film he gives Submarine an aurora of quirkiness and creativity rarely found in British cinema.

Timetable changes..

This is what happens when all the staff are practicing design professionals, it's a great thing that they are all in the industry - but sometimes we have to make changes.

I've decided to shunt the FDA2 C&C back a couple of weeks, I'm quite happy with this - starting academic work on your first day back might not be too bright, even for year 2 - so here is a slightly updated timetable for the coming week.

Monday

- everyone in at 10am - enrollment with SCCH at 11am - all in the studio at 1.30pm for induction and a quick talk through the year. First brief to hand out for FDA1

Tuesday

- FDA1 enroll at UoB in the morning ( in Person at Havelock Road, as long as it's a straight foreward enrollment, you do not need to attend college ), FDA2 in the studio to talk through their year in detail and collect their first brief at 10am. Presentation of your fanzine work and collection of written work.  I'll probably make this a half day as you will have research to do for your brief.

Wednesday

- I'm going to try and get a seat on the free coach for all students ( not just FDA1 ) to go to the Freshers Fair at the University of Brighton, at Brighton Racecourse - you might as well make the most of the opportunity.

Thursday and Friday

FDA1 - in the studio from 10am, this 2 day session includes your first studio brief and tutorials - and a talk through of the whole year in detail.

Friday 23 September 2011

What's Happening Next Week.

It's all fairly simple and no fuss.

Monday -

you are all enrolling, and need to be up in the old illustration studio at 10am - enrollment is at 11am. After that - back in the studio at 1.30 for a talk with me ( 1st and 2nd years ) for a couple of hours.

Tuesday -

First years are enrolling at the UoB in the mornning ( down the road at the old UcH site )

Second years are in the studio with me all day - and getting a new brief and talking through the year.

Wednesday -

First years are invited to the freshers fare in Brighton

Second years have Gary in the morning for C&C, then in the afternoon - me and Gary are looking at the fanzines, and I'll collect the written work.

I think Olga has organised a drink afterward.

Thursday and Friday

First years are in the studio with me for talks, a short project and start of year informal tutorials. Second years will probably be out spending their student loans.

Nothing too heavy, it's only the first week and you will probably end up pretty exhausted with all the changes. I'll go through the new timetable with everyone - explain how the year works and talk about all the new stuff that's happening. Things will be very different for you all - and there is a lot to get your head round.

Looking forward to seeing everyone - hope you all had a great holiday and a good rest. ( I didn't - but that's another story... )

Flat to let / Old Town

Our next door neighbour in Silchester Mews has a 2-bed maisonette
in George Street to let. Apparently it's very nice and has some outdoor
roof/garden space too.

It is above Black Market, so tenants who likes a lively nightlife would

be ideal.
