Lovely work here for Moleskin - simple and fun.

Good Work

Excellent body of work here from Scottish designer Colin Bennett.

Film Poster Cliches

We have touched on this one already - mostly with reference to Trajan, the 'fon for film posters... but here is a handy guide - also useful because quite a few of you were drawn to this particular cliche for 'The Kraken wakes'

GFDA intern interview

Interesting interview with the Intern at GFDA, last year a student managed to get an internship at a Brighton design studio but left because they asked her to stuff some envelopes. Don't make the same mistake.

Blurb / Indesign plug in

FDA2 Jo sent me this - and I saw that one of you put it up on the facebook page earlier, useful plug in that may save you time.

I'm assuming that you are all using the FB resource - social networking is a really important part of your industry, and it's one less thing for me to do.

Useful link

Found by FDA2 Mel - very good read with excellent work comparisons.

Essay Mentorship

Remember FDA2 - you MUST book in with Hannah Rollings yourself this week ( Monday or Tuesday ) if you need 1-2-1 mentoring for your essays. I've booked Hannah out of the teaching budget - if more people want help - I can find the funds to use her as often as needed - but I'll be very disappointed if you don't use the time we are offering, Hannah's contribution to year 2 essays made a huge difference to the grades, so take advantage.

Creative Writing Opp.

The University of Brighton is pleased to offer you the chance to have your creative writing published in a collaborative anthology alongside the work of other students and staff from the universities of Brighton, Sussex and Chichester.

From the successful entries, a team of independent judges will choose the top three pieces, with prizes of £100 for first place, and two runner up prizes of £50.

The theme for this year’s anthology is:

Submissions must be no longer than 2,000 words, and poetry not longer than 40 lines. All forms of creative writing are accepted.

The deadline for entries is the 14th of February 2012.

Flash & Flirt

This came in from the UoB, who committed contact details - but I'm sure that if you are keen, you will find them

Flash & Flirt – for the visual artist… as far as your imagination will go.

We are looking for the the next shining star of the future. We want to get your artwork in front of art buyers, magazines, galleries and art directors.

Flash & Flirt will be a quarterly magazine aimed at visual artists and photography students who would like to see their work in a high-quality, glossy magazine which with your help will be launched in the first half of 2012.

Flash & Flirt will initially be available in various outlets around Brighton, but the intention is to eventually go nationwide.

We need your support to make this happen! Get in touch, let us know your ideas and what you would like to see. Come and join us in our meetings too.

Please get in touch via our ‘Flash & Flirt magazine’ Facebook page, add your images and comments, click the ‘Like’ button and, most importantly, tell your friends.

Book Design Review

Very useful reference here suggested by Karen Wilks. The comparisons are really interesting - and useful to all FDA2

Sunday 27 November 2011

Week Starting November 28th

FDA2 - Monday and Tuesday, you have 2 days with Karen Wilks, refining your book covers and co pelting the typographic elements. karen is an expert here - and you were advised to be ready to take advantage of tis set period to get your work up to scratch. I shall be in early on Monday to brief Karen on everyone's individual progress.

On Wednesday, there will be a national day of industrial action by a number of unions. I have moved Gary out of the FDA2 timetable and shall add him back in after xmas when you need him most, which is why you were briefed last week on your essays. Myles Calvert is not a union member and will me manning the print studios for FDA1 as timetabled and any FDA2 students who wish to take advantage of this time.

I can't really predict how the day will develop - but the college will be open, you are all encouraged to use the studio and facilities and there will be nothing to stop you from working.

Thursday FDA1 are with Terry Lewis for the 2nd time, and Friday they are with Myles Calvert ( FDA2 - you may use this time too )

Wednesday 23 November 2011

Critical and Cultural FDA2

You have been briefed, you know what to do - if you have any questions - gary needs to know this week AND NO LATER.

I have emailed you all a brief and all the links to all the films.

You can book into see Hannah Rollings for mentoring on December 6th if you want to - just email and ask. You must hand your essay in on Wednesday December 14 as directed. There can be no late submissions. Remember - computer crashes and lost USB sticks are not accepted by the University as mitigating circs.

Found this

For FDA2 - very nice piece of work - I like the fact that it's square and responds to the two titles of the book equally - and references the above and below the water theme - and two possible perspectives as hero (Ishmael / The Whale)

Common Room TV

I've been told that the Screen in the common room is now liked to the TV... not sure what that actually means.

R

Work Opp.

I am looking for a student to assist the University of Brighton and the Media Enterprise Centre with some marketing, not really paid work - all costs covered ( and only a few bits and pieces ) but an exceptional opportunity to be supported and networked locally - if you are thinking of going freelance after college - you really need to start looking at building up a reputation. Contact me directly

R

Stuart Duff

I picked up a copy of Amateur Photographer yesterday ( November edition - £2.65) and there is a feature about St Leonards' Photographer Stuart Duff - with his seascapes taken from the window of his St Leonard's Studio. There is a link to his work here.

Very useful reference for FDA2 - it's like I said last night - none of you have really appreciated that all the books are based on the Sea... and it's that big thing - over there - outside the window.....

Job Opp.

One of my old students is a senior at The White Room - they have an opening for a junior designer, bottom f the ladder - but very good experience and a great agency - lots of different projects and every possible facet of the design industry - the details are all here.

edit - sorry about the wrong link... oops.

Monday 21 November 2011

Missing book.

This os missing from the studio - it's my copy - with a label... I'd like it back please!

The base room studio

I was in early this morning and it had been left in a terrible mess, rubbish everywhere - including food and drink, all the tables dirty and chairs all over the place.

It's not my job to come in and clean up after you - which I seem to have to do every day.

I doubt that the next Subject Leader will fight as hard as I have to keep this space - other departments have already started saying how much they like this studio - if you want to keep it - look after it, and that includes watering the plans ( most of which I paid for )

There will be NO food and drink in the studio until further notice.

Barbarella

This is the original version of the french comic book character, I've given you a link to the Wiki page below - you must spend some time before the film looking through all the cultural references and viewing it as part of popular culture that's connected to so many other things in the media, and how the film effected the lives and careers of the actors, I didn't know that jane Fonda turned down 'Bonnie and Clyde' to do this - which is a relief - because it went on to be one of the most important and influential American films of the 1960's without her. There is a big difference between watching a film for entertainment - and decoding it, looking for what you can lear and use. The FDA1 brief is all about decoding and re-imagining. It's not an accident that the film list was grouped into genres ( Modesty Blaise, Fantastic Voyage, Barbarella) - so you should be able to tackle a group of films.

Week Starting November 21st

Monday and Tuesday - FDA2 are in the studio with me - and you are presenting your research on Tuesday afternoon.

On Wednesday - FDA2 are with Gary Neil in the studio - because of industrial action next week - you will be briefed on your essays - you MUST be in on time.

FDA1 are printing all day with Myles. Make sure you are in early enough to get ready before Gary starts teaching in the studio.

If I can pick up a copy on Monday - the film will be Barbarella - it's one of the films that FDA1 have been told to study for their film titles brief ( Terry thought the research was... a bit thin)

Thursday and Friday - FDA1 are with Peter Quinnell - working on film titles and the Warhol Brief - and on Friday, Hannah Rollings will be with you too - helping you to work with the artwork artwork for the portrait prints.

The Ofstead inspection of the FE part of the college starts today. Inspectors will wear a red sash - this should not effect you but they have access to all areas - so remember what I said, no coffee cups or food in the studio.

Friday 18 November 2011

Slight timetable change for FDA2

There will be an industrial day of action on November 30th, and as a result I've moved the final C&C forward - Gary will be briefing you this week coming on your essays - and you will there free have an extra week plus the full week of Academic time. The deadline remains the same.

FDA1 have Myles Calvert for screenprinting all day - it's also open to any FDA2 students who want to take advantage of this quiet day.

It's possible that there will be some travel disruption on that day - so please plan any journeys carefully.

Travel Reductions

Students over 26 years can get a rail card with the NUS Extra Card+ ISIC (International Student Identification Card) it costs £12+.99, (http://cards.nus.org.uk/buy/default.aspx). The NUS Extra costs £11, and the ISIC element £1.99.

I always advise the students to check with Southern Railways the terms and conditions before buying NUS Extra, http://www.southernrailway.com/tickets-and-fares/railcards-and-discounts/.

Google and Bletchley Park

More reasons why Turing and Enigma are relevant to you today

Film Poster

THis is a great image for both FDA1 - who are about to start a film poster brief, and FDA2 - for their publishing brief. Brilliant piece of work, I'd like to show 'Blow Up' to you - if I can get hold of a good copy. It's a classic 1960's mystery about a fashion photographer who may, or may not - have photographed a murder by mistake. Good work.

Photography Commission

This ties in exactly with the FDA2 brief that John developed.

The Hastings and St Leonards Tourism Association needs a portfolio of images for their website - last year a student on Top Up was able to use the project to design their logo as Work Experience - this would be a good opportunity to do the same and get something for it. Contact me for details and I'll arrange it if you are suitable.

Turning Your Ideas into Reality
2.00pm – 4.00pm, Wednesday 14th December 2011
Room 4.15 at The University of Brighton, Hastings Campus

Got a good idea, but have no idea how to realise it?

Having a great idea is one thing, but turning it into reality can be a challenge. Did you know it wasn't until his 5126th prototype that James Dyson was finally satisfied with his first bagless vacuum cleaner? Even then, he still had to ensure that he could promote the product, prove each and every one of his products were safe to use, protect his intellectual property, find premises to work from, hire and keep his staff happy, write contracts and agreements and keep within the right side law on issues like tax, employment and company structure. I'm glad to say that Sir Dyson did alright in the end though!

Come to this workshop at the University to see how you can easily develop a plan with tools which can help you move your idea forward and turn it into a viable reality.

To register please email Brad at B.Crescenzo@brighton.ac.uk.

Further enterprise workshops are scheduled for 2012 and will be available to none students at a small cost. The costs are being finalised currently and we will publish these in due course.

Friday November 18th, you have access to the studio all day - but start at 10am with Myles Calvert in the print room.

Ofstead Inspection

At some point today - an Ofstead inspector will be in the department, they are only here to observe and will be identified by a yellow visitors lanyard - as we are not being inspected ourselves, it's nothing to worry about - essentially they are just having a look around.

Lectures in Brighton

Here is a short list of lectures coming up at Brighton. All are very welcome to join any of the sessions.

All lectures start at 11am in the Sallis Benney Theatre. All Thursdays . . .

10 November – Kate Moross
17 November – Jonny Trunk
24 November Rose Blake
1 December
David Foldvari – TBC

These are FANTASTIC creatives and all FDA2 are urged to attend - it's essential that you engage with your industry and see what's happening out there - just looking at FFFFound all day isn't enough. Check out the links and make dates in your diary.

H.E and Ofstead

As I'm sure you all know - there will be an Ofstead inspection in a couple of weeks. This does not effect you directly, as the inspection is greared towards F.E - however, they will be looking at us from the progression angle - making sure that we are fit to take F.E students who want to progress up to Higher Education. During this period, it's important that you follow the rules  as a courtesy to me and the staff from F.E. who are working very hard to give the best possible impression. That means no food and drink in the studio ( except water ) and lanyards worn at all times, you must also be careful not to use the front lift without permission. I'm usually quite flexible on these things - but I would ask you to play by the rules, just for this week.

Additionally - I have been called to an H.E. forum  meeting tomorrow afternoon at 3.30pm, the film will already be showing in SP4113 - I'm sure I can trust you all to be left alone with it for an hour.

2011 Xmas Stamps.

The Xmas stamp issue from the Post Office is usually quite a big deal - this years stamps are very accomplished - but actually quite safe and tame, but think about it - there are reasons for that. During times of economic and social insecurity - people tend to revert to traditional, safe stimulus - a kind of visual comfort zone - so it's no surprise that this issue is very traditional. So many people this year will hark after a 'Victorian' Christmas ideal - which is an artificial concept - and like last year - consumer spending will be very slow until the 4 or 5 days before Xmas when people get so tired and stressed that they give into temptation and spend recklessly - many retail groups are already slashing prices and holding sales early to tempt insecure and cautious shoppers.

As designers it's really important that you understand how society works, trends in shopping and spending - how the environment effects taste and trend - and how to deliver work that's creative but appropriate.

It's also interesting to see how they tackle the large and small versions of each stamp - which nobody picked up on....

There is a very good link here to the website that monitors and announces all new stamp issues - their collateral material and future releases - essential for you all as you tackle the RSA brief - ( which is mandatory... ) - and good research for FDA1, who will be tackling this next year.

student union and social events

There is a meeting on Wednesday November 9th - if you have any ideas for events, clubs, societies etc that you would like the Union to develop for you - or require funding, please talk to your reps ( Olga FDA2 / Matt FDA1 ) and they can communicate directly with the University and the Union for you.

Opportunity

From Aaron - general manager at RikiTiki in the Laines, Brighton.

Due to a recent makeover at RIKI TIK we are looking to turn the venue into an art gallery for students and local artists to showcase their work.

We Love showing off art at RIKI TIK and have murals from some of the country’s best. Last August we had a party to show off the new look of RIKI TIK and had live art from Olly Megamunden (http://kneedeepinsleep.com/ollie-munden-elephantie-ltd-a2.html), PINKY (http://www.pinkyvision.com/) & There will be unicorns (http://therewillbeunicorns.com/). Here is the video that was made of the party http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WkkVvUHkptQ.

We have a lot of space at the venue and we love having parties with live art as the main theme. We also have a projector to show off visuals, film and graphics.

The venue is open 7 days a week and will be free of charge to all students who are looking to hire the venue. We can accommodate most needs, have two well stocked bars and serve tea and coffees.

The bar has a very big walk through as its on Bond Street which is one of the busiest shopping streets in the country.

Please pass this information to the relevant people/students. If interested they can contact me on 07825836081 or just pop into the bar.

Additionally - I've secured x5 15inch MacBook Pro's - for studio use only - under NO circumstances should they be used by anyone other than FDA Graphic Com.

Forgotten Heroes of Bletchley park

There is a staggeringly good doc and dramatisation here on iPlayer - not much about Turing, but plenty about the 'scene'.

There is also some brilliantly simple and appropriate graphic treatments that would have been ideal for the stamp brief, mostly just common design sense - using simple visual motifs and triggers to bring complex themes to life - an example to all of FDA2 how it should have been done.... and a very good soundtrack, mostly Radiohead - that weaves the old and the new together.

iPad app Design

Really interesting article here about developments in  the iPad / book debate

Coutts redesign

Pentagram have redesigned the logo for Coutts - I like the crowns and the division - but I hate the typography, the angle of the italic is too harsh for me - and it's a bit too 'wedding stationary' - I'm sure they could have done something with more personality

NYE Party

As I said yesterday - if you want to get involved in the New Years Eave 'Outrageous Decadence End of the World' Party at the Masonic - let me know. We need people to build sets and help with the props and decorations - including a Mayan Temple - which shouldn't be too much trouble. If you help - you get free entry ( as the numbers are strictly limited to 200 - you may not have much luck if you try and buy one )

Wednesday 2 November 2011

Screen Printing

FDA2 have another week with John Reynolds  and then you are working on your design for print module, which includes the manifesto brief. As you already have staff booked throughout this time - I am happy to let you decide when you need extra supervised screen printing on Monday and Tuesday - I know that most of you are already comfortable in the workshop - but if you feel that a specific 1 or 2 days of extra print tuition time will help you - please let me know and I'll book Myles.

YCN Student Awards Call for Entries!

We are delighted to publish the call for entries of the 2011/12 YCN Student Awards. This years 15 live creative briefs present challenges ranging from preventing film privacy to packaging Google products; from re-engaging a young audience for Heinz Salad Cream, to switching audiences on to ESPN.

The deadline for submissions is March 30th 2012 and everything your students will need to take part can be found here.

You can view all the past commended work, archived here.

If you need any further information please contect Kezia.

For all Students

If you miss anything, it's YOUR responsibility to catch up and find out what you need to know. If you miss a briefing or a crit, you need to make sure that you have all the information - This is a full time course, you have studio access 5 days per week, and contact teaching 3 days per week - far more than most comparable courses - and we stretch out the teaching budgets to the limits to give you as much staff time as we can - you are responsible for making best use of the 10 - 5pm time slot ( that's an hour longer than last year ) to keep up to speed.

If you can't get the information you need from the blog ( which I'm not obliged to maintain, and is contrary to the wishes of the college ) or the Facebook page, or from your co-students or staff rep, then chase the staff during class times. Remember - I'm only supposed to be with you two days per week - and there are nearly 30 of you, so you may have to chase me sometimes - but take responsibility for your own education and make sure that you don't miss anything.

If you were not in the class this afternoon when I gave out the FDA2 Manifesto brief - chase a co-student, or email me for a copy.

Films

Sorry about the computer crashing tonights film, that's bloody typical - Will said he'd try and get a torrent, it's well worth watching. Next weeks film will be - The Filth and The Fury - Julien Temple's award wining doc about The Sex Pistols.

Here is the Wiki page for the creator of the amazing animation 'The Mascot' - and you can link through to some of his other fantastical work

Gary sent me through the following information - go to the Drop Box for the powerpoint presentation - and click on the links for the films

here's the link to the ppt that the absent students need to watch.

they must watch this with someone else's notes and must speak to
someone who was in the session to get their take on it before watching it.

here's some links the absent students need to watch.

Tuesday 1 November 2011

Wednesday November 2nd

Quite a lot on tomorrow - so just to be 100% sure -

FDA1 are with Richard in the H.E. common room at 10am, to show ( and the group ) me the location shooting results - and then I'll work through all of them with you to get the best results - I also want to talk to you about online resources, and briefly about feedback from John. I also have the prints from last week to talk about - and how they will be used later this term.

FDA2 are with Gary at 10am sharp, he asked you to prepare for this lesson - you have been reminded twice on the blog.

I have to go to the divisional meeting over lunch - then at 1.30pm I will be in Glenn Whitings animation suite showing slides and talking to a group of selected students from ND and Foundation about the graphic design industry, FdA Graphic Com, and my own experiences as a designer - the work I do etc and the clients I have. I want FDA1 to be  there too. FDA2 are still with Gary until he is finished.

Once Gary is finished with C&C, - all students are in the studio to talk through the Manifesto research and brief ( typo project ) and to give me the re-presented postage stamp work. I have the RSA Brief to talk through briefly.

After that - there are 2 films. Smashing Time is on DVD, it's about 90mins long. The Mascot is only about 20mins long. Because my G5 died today  ( with my MP4 copy ) - I will be showing you a streamed version - if it does not agree with the college network - I'll post it onto the blog, you all need to watch it - I'll talk about both films tomorrow.
